Automation & Control Engineer
Overview:
A leading industrial plant in Ireland, situated on a significant site, is seeking a skilled Automation & Control Engineer. The plant is one of the largest in its industry in Europe, with extensive production capacity and an integrated power generation facility. Known for continuous improvement and innovation, the company is a world leader in its field.
The Automation Team:
The automation systems are crucial enablers at this industrial plant, encompassing a diverse mix of platforms such as PLCs, Distributive Control Systems (DCS), Safety Control Systems, and specialist automation systems for on-site power generation assets. The Automation & Control Team provides essential process control engineering support for ongoing operations and future projects. The team ensures that process control objectives are met for continuous operations within the plant's process units, working closely with various departments including Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability Engineering, and Maintenance, as well as external consultants and vendors.
Key Responsibilities:
Implementing Changes:
- Implement minor adjustments and additions to existing automation and control systems.
- Enhance and optimize current systems to increase efficiency and performance.
Innovating Automation:
- Develop and implement new automation strategies to improve plant operations.
- Maximize the utilization of existing automation platforms and introduce new levels of automation.
Technical Support:
- technical support to various project teams.
- Lead or participate in project teams focused on automation and control.
Problem Solving and Project Management:
- Solve complex problems related to automation and control systems.
- Manage data modeling tasks and oversee project management activities.
Future-Proofing Infrastructure:
- Ensure the existing process control infrastructure (DCS, PLCs, and advanced instrumentation) is up-to-date and effective.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Interface with multiple departments, including Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability Engineering, and Maintenance.
- Engage with external consultants and vendors as necessary.
On-Call Responsibilities:
- Be available on-call for one week every four weeks to address any arising issues, after the first year.
Skills and Qualifications:
Educational Background:
- Minimum undergraduate degree in chemical, electrical, automation, or mechanical engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
Experience:
- At least 3 years of experience in control or automation engineering.
Technical Expertise:
- Demonstrable expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Process Control Infrastructure
- PLCs (Siemens / Allen Bradley / Rockwell)
- DCS (preferably Honeywell and/or GE Mark VI)
- Cyber protection solutions
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate and improve control systems.
- Proficient in problem-solving and data modeling.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Outgoing and self-driven, with the ability to interact effectively with people across different levels of the organization.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to foster teamwork and collaboration.

Working Hours:
Normal working hours are from 8:00 to 16:30.
On-call duty after 12 months, one week in four.
