Assistant Director General, International and Government Accounts

The Central Statistics Office was established in 1949 as Ireland's national statistical office. The mandate of the CSO is "The collection, compilation, extraction and dissemination for statistical purposes of information relating to economic, social and general activities and conditions in the State". The CSO is also responsible for coordinating the official statistics of other public authorities and for developing the statistical potential of administrative records.

The International and Government Accounts Directorate comprises about 65 staff and produces over 100 statistical outputs every year. These statistical products include key economic information. The Directorate also incorporates the Government Finance Statistics Classifications Divisions which is responsible for the Register of Public Sector Bodies and for determining which Public Service bodies are on/off the Government Balance Sheet.

Reporting to the Director General of the CSO, the ADG will be responsible for delivering and developing the work programme for International and Government Accounts, and for providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction at directorate and corporate level in the CSO.

The successful candidate will have:

·       Significant recent management experience at an appropriate senior level, including leading and managing technical/multidisciplinary teams in a large or complex organisation undergoing significant change and working cooperatively in a dispersed management structure;

·       A good knowledge and understanding, or the ability to acquire quickly an understanding, of statistical methodology as it applies to the production of official statistics;

·       Experience which demonstrates a high level of numeracy and acumen in handling and interpreting statistical data;

·       The ability to present statistical results and concepts, both orally and in writing, in a confident and professional manner to the full range of users;

·       A good understanding of the social, political and economic environments and their impact on the demand for statistical information;


It is also highly desirable that the appointee should hold a relevant third level qualification in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics etc.;) and experience and in-depth knowledge of a relevant field of statistical expertise.

And will have the capacity to quickly acquire:

·       An understanding of the statistics and services available from the CSO, and an appreciation of the complexities of the CSO environment.

This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.
