The Department of Education (DoE) employs over 2000 staff in four main locations: Dublin (Marlborough Street and Blanchardstown), Athlone and Tullamore. The Department’s mission is to facilitate children and young people, through learning, to achieve their full potential and contribute to Ireland’s social, economic and cultural development. The Department, in budgetary terms, is the third largest government department with an annual budget of over €10 billion. Its staff provides services to Government and to the education sector which serves almost one million children at any point in time across 4,000 schools.
The person appointed will act as the Head of Schools Division (Assistant Secretary General Level) and will be based in the Department’s offices in Athlone.
Reporting to the Secretary General, the Head of Schools Division will lead a team of eight Principal Officers with over 100 staff who are mainly located in Athlone. The role involves working extensively with other business areas of the Department, as well as working with education stakeholders. It also involves working in partnership with other Government Departments including the Departments of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science; Health, Children, Disability, Equality, and Integration and Social Protection.
The successful candidate will have:
· Significant hands-on Senior Management experience in a Leadership role combined with relevant education qualifications at a level appropriate for such a senior management position.
· A proven ability in relation to resource allocation and financial management in a resource constrained environment;
· Extensive and successful experience in the anticipation and management of organisational change: this includes the ability to drive and develop dynamic innovative change in a complex, fast-moving environment;
· A proven high level of policy analysis and development skills, and a demonstrated ability to lead the transition from policy to active delivery of change.
This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.
