Director of Services Limerick City and County Council

Limerick City and County Council performs a leading role in shaping the strategic vision of the city and county. It provides a diverse, comprehensive, and evolving range of services to citizens, businesses and visitors to the county which include the provision of housing, planning, development, environmental, transportation, enterprise, leisure and community services.

The Director of Service supports the Director General in advancing the physical, economic, social and cultural life of the City and County and in developing and overseeing the organisational structures and resources needed to deliver an extensive range of services to the public, in a cost effective and efficient manner.

Limerick City and County Council employs over 1,500 staff and has an estimated revenue and capital spend of over €252 million and €756 million respectively in 2025, delivering over 700 services which are allocated under eight directorates –

•            Corporate Services, Human Resources & Organisational Development

•            Environment, Climate Action & Shared Services

•            Finance, Economic Development & Digital Services

•            Rural, Culture, Community & Tourism Development

•            Regeneration, Sports and Recreation

•            Housing

•            Transportation and Mobility

•            Planning & Place Making

Day to day management of these services take place under the stewardship of the Director General, a Deputy Director General, 7 Directors of Service including a Director of Finance. The Director General supports the Mayor in the delivery of the mayoral executive functions, but also retains responsibility for a range of specified functions, such as human resources management and managing and accounting for the Council’s finances.

An opportunity now exists in Limerick City and County Council for the position of Director of Services.

The Director of Service, who reports directly to the Director General, will be required to lead complex multi-agency interactions, including with the private sector, which will maximise output for Limerick City and County Council from the range of public and private sector resources in the region. The Director of Service is required to work closely with the Mayor of Limerick and the elected Councillors to deliver the full range of services and implement organisational and local policy decisions. They will play a key role in supporting the Mayor and the Council’s members in fulfilling their statutory and representational functions in accordance with the principles of good governance. This includes working effectively with them by providing policy support, keeping them informed and developing proposals for agreement prior to implementation within their area of responsibility.
