Overview
The Southern Star, one of Ireland’s leading, independently owned local newspaper businesses is looking to recruit a dynamic Editor to lead the next stage of our news publishing operations.
We reach thousands of readers every day via our newspaper, features, website
and social media and we’re passionate about delivering first class, trusted journalism to local communities across West Cork and beyond.
This high profile role will oversee, develop and evolve our publishing output and help maintain our position as the leading local news, lifestyle, information and sports publisher for West Cork.
What the role involves
- Lead and motivate a team of editors, journalists and freelance contributors/photographers to find, source and report the latest news from across our region via our award-winning newspaper and digital channels
- Having a passion for local news, local life and local people
- As a member of the senior leadership team work closely with the Managing Director and other department heads to enhance our publishing for our readers
- Evolve and lead the design, layout, style and tone of the newspaper in line with our readers’ expectations now and into the future
- Edit and carefully check all content to ensure it’s of the highest possible standards and compliant with rigorous legal requirements
- Work with our digital team to contribute to our digital publishing operations, in particular our subscription programme
- Suggest, encourage and cultivate a creative, proactive and ideas-led team culture and environment
- An eye for detail and able to work under pressure in a busy newsroom to meet weekly deadlines
Experience and Qualifications
- Ideally a minimum of 4 years as a Senior Sub Editor, Deputy Editor or Editor with experience within a local or national newspaper, other news media or editorial/publishing environment
- Third level education, ideally a journalism qualification
Salary
A competitive salary package is available for the right candidate
Location
The Southern Star head office in Skibbereen. Some partial hybrid possibilities may exist for the right candidate.
