IT Programmer / Developer

3 + month contract

Immediate start required

South City

Salary: €48 – 60k+ Depending on type and level of experience

Have an on-going involvement in projects for the development and upgrade of existing PAS systems/application and the implementation, integration of new PAS systems/applications. Promote the effective and efficient use of information processes within the hospital and to provide technical support for existing PAS systems within the hospital. Will also include a key role in the delivery of projects as part of the Hospital’s ICT strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for project management of upgrades or modifications to existing Patient Administration Systems (PAS).
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating manuals on the Hospital’s bespoke CAPAS system.
  • To identify information needs and evaluate current status of PAS systems.
  • Develop specifications or enhancements for interfaces or integration of databases.
  • Design and test new interfaces or integrations (SQL calls) between applications.
  • To work with user departments in developing applications to support the hospitals information strategy.
  • To review the effectiveness of existing PAS applications.
  • Analyse, design, code, test and support of interfaces and interface enhancements for disparate system integration.
  • Responsible for reviewing vendor specifications and formulating methods of implementing using approved coding language and standards.
  • To work with application vendors in designing and specifying the Hospital application needs.
  • Responsible for documenting interface flow in a meaningful manner so that the users can gain an understanding of the data flow.
  • Co-ordinate connectivity testing and trigger testing with the vendor.
  • Train the users in the use of the system and provide support on an on-going basis. Provide training documentation for users.
  • Identify information needs and evaluate current status of systems.
  • To prepare risk analysis and progress reports for stakeholders.
  • To undertake project planning, team leading and provide project deliverables such as business cases, implemented software, trained and supported users, change management, post project reviews.
  • To write test specifications and carry out or manage software testing. Write the code, or adapt existing codes and test the system to make sure there are no glitches in it.
  • Responsible for logging errors, changes or issues on software.
  • Identify and implement operational processes.
  • Responsible for the configuration, installations and scheduling of new, improved applications and server operating systems in support if business processing requirements.
  • Perform and monitor system backups to ensure data recoverability through proper administration of storage and retrieval services.
  • Devise disaster recovery system, restore procedures in conjunction with ICT Manager.
  • Record system usage and performance, identify system problems and processes tracking/ reporting of maintenance and fine tune systems to achieve optimum levels including capacity planning.
  • Facilitate any changes to Hospital systems/ infrastructure/hardware/software /network as directed by the ICT manager whilst maintaining best practice.
  • Implement new systems, procedures, protocols and software/hardware as directed by the ICT manager while maintaining best practice.
  • Implement changes to client ICT systems, infrastructure, hardware, software, network as a result of internal and external directives or as a result of any regulatory or legal entity.
  • Assist in the integration of medical/ lab equipment to the Hospital network.
  • Assist in the integration of medical/ radiology equipment to the Hospital network.
  • Apply and monitor JCI accreditation standards where applicable within the ICT environment.
  • Develop contingency plans and put in place a specific information system go down and ensure that data is re-entered on the system accurately when the system returns.
  • Participate in ICT meetings with management on the introduction of initiatives aimed at providing a better quality of service to our users.
  • Be actively involved in the hospital’s change management process.
  • Document all projects, upgrades, changes to system processed etc so there is a detailed record to use for future reference.
  • Present ideas for system improvements, including cost proposals.
  • Work with existing software, modify it and integrate it into the existing network.
  • Testing software to ensure the code is correct, fixing ('debugging') errors where they occur, and rerunning and rechecking the programme until it produces the correct results in controlled, real situations before going live.
  • Facilitate and participate where appropriate in the education and training of other Hospital staff as the need arises.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • 3rd level Degree in an IT field
  • Minimum 2 years Visual Basic and Visual Studio version 6
  • SQL 2012 Administration and Maintenance
  • HL7 Interfacing


  • Knowledge of DICOM Imaging
  • Experience with Clinical Systems
  • Crystal Reports experience an advantage
  • Experience in a healthcare environment
